The tried and tested Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) also known as the Hair Transplant Procedure.
What is a Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)?
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is a hair restoration surgery that enables the hair transplant surgeons MAXIM Philippines to perform MEGA hair transplant sessions for up to 5,000 grafts. FUT is achieved by taking a strip of hair from the back and sides of the scalp called the donor area and transplanting these collected grafts to the thinning and balding areas. In addition, this was the procedure taken by the renowned Philippine Basketball player, Alvin Patrimonio, who is very happy with the results of his hair restoration.
How does a Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) Procedure Work?
Preparation
Preparing for a Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) starts even before the actual hair transplant. While you will be given a more detailed guide, here are some examples of preparations you would need to follow:
- No alcohol 48 hours prior to transplant;
- No Vitamin E 7 days before the transplant;
- Get at least 8 hours of sleep the night before the transplant; and
- Eat a light breakfast on the date of the transplant.
Pausing blood thinners or other medications may also be advised a few days prior to your transplant but consult with your doctor before stopping any medications. It is also important to note that medical clearance may be required for clients over 65 years old, as well as those with a history of hypertension and cardiac issues.
Procedure
The FUT procedure will be performed in a clinical setting by only our highly-trained and experienced hair transplant surgeons, assisted by certified nurses. A local anesthesia is then administered which means that you can easily enjoy light activities during your procedure such as watching a film, reading a book, chatting with our experts, or even taking a nap. Our goal is to establish a serene atmosphere, ensuring you feel relaxed and at ease throughout the entire procedure.
Once the anesthesia has taken effect, the surgeon proceeds to remove a strip of skin from the back or side of your head also called the donor area in order to extract individual hair follicles. These follicles are dissected into individual grafts and subsequently implanted into the areas of your scalp experiencing hair loss.
When hair transplants were first performed, each graft usually consisted of 5 to 10 hair follicles called Plugs. These easily looked like doll hair making the transplant very obvious to the naked eye. Now, each graft only consists of 1 to 3 hair follicles—also known as micro grafts or micro-follicular hair transplantation—which give a much more natural finish.
All in all, an FUT can last up to 6 to 9 hours depending on factors such as the type of procedure, the number of grafts, hair curvature, patient discomfort tolerance, adherence to pre-operative instructions, medical history, and other considerations. Patients, however, have the liberty to take bathroom or meal breaks throughout the procedure.
